GirlGoneGeek says: Out in the country, you need a whole different set of apps to have a good time. Who needs Yelp and Localicious when there's nowhere to go? Be sure to pack your phone or tablet with these apps before heading out into the Land of No WiFi, and enjoy a breath of fresh air.
GirlGoneGeek's picks
  1. Sky Map
Sky Map I never used this at home so close to the city, but now that I'm stuck out here in the sticks for a week (this is not a vacation), I'm finding that it's a lot of fun. It's amazing how much better the sky looks without city lights, even in the distance.
  2. My Augmented Reality
My Augmented Reality A fun app for exploring, snapping shots of where you are and finding your way around and back. Great for just going out for a walk in unfamiliar territory.
  3. Postagram Postcards
Postagram Postcards Once you get into town, there are tacky postcards and tacky souvenirs everywhere. But who wants to drive 20 minutes just to get something tacky? Use this app to snap a pic yourself where you REALLY are, and send it as a postcard to a friend.
  4. FlashLight
FlashLight Find your way around at night - and in my case, find the dog in the woods.
  5. Wireless Tether for Root Users
Wireless Tether for Root Users It can be pretty hard to find internet access in the great outdoors, and the little mom-and-pop motels in the backwoods don't usually offer it. But if you can get phone service, you can make your phone a WiFi hotspot - albeit a pretty slow one if your cell reception is spotty - and stay fully connected to the world. As a matter of fact- I'm using it right now!
